Did you know that YouTube is the second largest search engine on the web? Are you taking advantage of this opportunity to generate traffic and improve your SEO?
Anyone reading this already knows that Google is THE search engine. The days of optimizing our websites for multiple search engines have passed, right?
Well technically… yes, except that the website is no longer the only place we have an online presence. In fact, some businesses get far more exposure through their presence on websites other than their 'homepage', whether it be vacation rentals through popular bookings and review sites, through Twitter and Facebook, or through YouTube. Many, many get major exposure through Youtube.
As a matter of fact, billions of searches per month go through YouTube. Over 30 million searches per day.
Youtube is the new SEO frontier
Are you optimizing content for YouTube? Here's more on why you should consider it.
First of all, don't just take my word for it.
At this year's MozCon, an exceptionally popular online marketing conference, there was a very well-received presentation on this very topic. You can view the helpful slide show for some useful information.

So now that we understand that YouTube is a big juicy search engine that you may want to consider taking advantage of, here's a basic overview of how to optimize your YouTube content:
Well optimized titles on YouTube content is the first thing of importance as far as showing up in searches. Put careful thought into your YouTube content titles, but as with all web writing, don't let it read like obviously optimized text. That's bad SEO and bad marketing.
In many content platforms, tagging means determining and labeling content with keywords that identify the subject matter. Choose carefully, as you would your keywords for Google searches. Make them relevant, do your research to make sure they are terms your target market would use to find your content, and look at what competing YouTube channels are using. For more information on YoTube tagging, this is a good start .
It's worthwhile to take care while writing your descriptions. For one thing, consider including a URL to your website or other content within the first line or two, as only those show in description previews. But people do read descriptions, and YouTube does scour them for keyword information. Keyword-optimized YouTube descriptions will help your ranking in searches.
Including optimized closed captioning in your YouTube content is smart SEO, as long as you do it well and don't obviously cram it with keywords. YouTube and Google both parse closed captioning text; it does benefit rankings. It also increases your potential audience by providing access to those who wouldn't otherwise have it! Here's a helpful tutorial on how to add closed captioning to your YouTube videos.
Views, Likes, and Comments
YouTube does include content popularity in its ranking system, so you should get your employees, colleagues, friends and family to view, like, and comment on your YouTube content whenever you can, especially to get the ball rolling.
Links & Shares
Strive to make content that's shareable because it's informative, entertaining, perplexing, emotionally moving! How often a YouTube video is linked to or shared will have an impact on its ranking in searches both on YouTube and in Google.
YouTube channel owners can change accessibility features, much to the chagrin of smart phone users who encounter a video that is not viewable in that format. Unless there's a really good reason to limit accessibility to your YouTube content, make sure it's as accessible as possible to generate more potential views, likes, comments, shares and links!
There's too much potential traffic on YouTube to tap into to not make the most of your content on there. Getting your brand represented with good quality content on YouTube is a considerably effective digital marketing tactic, but just getting content up there isn't going to get maximum results. Do what you can to make it easy for people to find it, and to find you.
