A brand new Google Analytics referral has appeared in several of our accounts:

com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox

This relied on some investigative work to understand what this new majestic referral could possibly refer to. And it did not appear to be referral spam because the bounce rate was not 100% and the URL appeared credible.

*DRUMROLL PLEASE*

This is organic traffic coming from Android devices while searching in the Google Search Apps.

If you pay attention to the first two words, ‘com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox,’ you will see that it’s google.com written backward. As you can see it shows in the URL of the Google search app in android:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox

It isn’t spam, but since it is organic you want your Google Analytics to depict this as accurately as possible.

Technically this traffic is coming from a Search Engine, but it shows as a referral.

This is an easy fix. You want this to show in your organic traffic so you fully understand how people are finding your website.

How to make com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox show as organic instead of referral?
