Why Are My Meta Ads Not Performing Anymore?

In 2025, it seems like every month there are new changes to each ad platform’s algorithm that makes keeping up with how to run ads difficult as a small business owner. Luckily, ads are just one of the things we do best here at North Studio!

For many clients who’ve come to us recently, their issue has been the same: “My ads used to perform great, but now our performance has dropped off the map and we’re not sure it’s worth it to run ads anymore.” Upon some digging, we’ve usually discovered that it’s not an issue with the ads themselves, but rather the tracking.

If you’ve been feeling similarly when it comes to your Meta ads, there’s a good chance it’s not your creative, targeting, or landing page getting in the way… it’s your Conversion API setup causing all the issues.

Why Conversion Tracking Matters Even More with Meta’s Andromeda Update

For years, most businesses relied on the browser Pixel to track conversions. This bit of code tracked when people clicked around, viewed specific pages, purchased products, signed up for subscriptions and newsletters… the basics. It wasn’t perfect, but it was consistent, and it was a tool businesses could rely on for a quick and usually painless setup to get more insights into how their ads were working.

Then came iOS changes, leading to more privacy concerns and data loss. The once decent amount of data coming through started to waver, but even then marketers were able to patch things together to still gain conversion clarity for their clients.

That is, until Meta’s Andromeda update changed the rules completely.

How Does Meta’s Andromeda Update Affect Ads Tracking on Facebook and Instagram?

If the old conversion tracking system was like driving with a GPS, Andromeda is like hopping into a self-driving car and letting it take the wheel. Unlike before, Andromeda doesn’t want you to steer every little thing and make decisions. Instead, it wants clean data, clear direction, and space to optimize on its own without your interference.

Andromeda depends heavily on accurate event data, and that’s just because it’s how the system now works:

  • First, Meta’s algorithm identifies patterns in your buyers;
  • It tracks what motivated them to take conversion action, across it’s platform and your website too,
  • Then it uses that data to find new customers with similar signals.

This is similar to lookalike audiences and audience match signals previous versions of Meta’s algorithm uses, but stepped up to even the next degree.

The new system sounds great, and will make it even easier for small businesses to spend their money wisely and target just the accounts on Facebook and Instagram who are most likely to take conversion action, and spend less money reaching people who aren’t likely to convert.

The catch? If Meta never receives those buying signals, or it receives broken, delayed, or partial data, the system simply can’t properly optimize. This leads to lower results, higher costs-per-conversion, and business owners across the world scratching their heads, wondering why their key performing campaigns suddenly have lost all steam.

Meta’s Browser Pixel Alone Isn’t Enough Anymore for Accurate Ads Conversion Tracking

Meta wants to make it easy for business owners to start running ads and spending on the platform, it’s part of the reason why boosted posts are still a thing even though they don’t offer nearly the same level of customizability that a campaign created in Ads Manager does. So Meta still lets you use that browser-side tracking with the Pixel, but the truth is that browser tracking is losing data left and right for a number of reasons:

  • Ad blockers
  • Private browsers like Brave
  • iOS settings
  • Cookie restrictions
  • Networks issues
  • and more

Every missing purchase or lead is a blind spot for both business owners and Meta’s algorithm. Imagine trying to teach Meta who your customers are, but you can only remember half of what the buying decisions and demographics are. With all the privacy restrictions now in place across operating systems and browsers, data from a browser Pixel is more of a best guess than accurate information.

So what to use instead? That’s where Server-side Conversion API comes into action, giving verified, accurate, and of-the-moment data from the source instead of relying on the user’s side to relay the information.

Standardizing the Use of Meta’s Conversion API (CAPI) for Businesses Running Ads in 2026

Ensuring CAPI is set up and tracking is like having a backup generator; instead of relying solely on user-side information, CAPI’s server-side data sends Meta’s algorithm cleaner data, more complete event tracking, better attribution, and other crucial context that Meta has started relying on for optimization.

But most business owners don’t have CAPI set up, which is leading to:

  • Ads performance dropping
  • Higher costs and cost-per-conversion
  • Weaker lookalike audiences

… sound familiar? If this is what you’re experiencing with your Meta Ads, you’re not the only one! Without the inside knowledge into Meta Ads, most business owners think that this is a problem with their ads traffic, and don’t realize that the issue is that Meta can’t actually see what’s happening once they send users over to the business’ website.

How Do I Know if Tracking is the Problem with My Meta Ads?

If you’re starting to realize that you might have a tracking problem and not an ads performance problem, here are some tell-tale signs you can look for:

  • Number of Purchases are way lower in Ads Manager than in your store’s backend system
  • Your events are firing twice or not at all
  • Campaigns leave the learning phase and then crash
  • Your retargeting audiences have shrunk considerably over the past few months
  • You’ve only got a Pixel set up and no other tracking
  • You have CAPI set up, but it’s not completely set up or was improperly set up
  • Your Ads results have tanked in the last couple of months (lining up with the Andromeda update)

If you check any of these boxes, it’s a clear sign that your ads creative isn’t the issue with your Ads performance, it’s an issue with tracking and signalling.

How Do I Fix Signalling Issues for Meta Ads?

The first step is to use a proper Conversion API setup and not rely on the default setup. (The same can be said for most default setups in Meta Ads Manager, by the way.) There are many ways to set up CAPI, but some of them are kind of flimsy.

Some site builders and tools like Shopify and WooCommerce have native CAPI integrations, which are fantastic for beginners but not quite good enough for businesses who rely on Meta Ads to bring in revenue in 2026. If you want clean, reliable business-grade server tracking, here are some tools worth considering:

Stape

Stape is like hiring an expert mechanic for your tracking engine, and is known as one of the most “set it and trust it” CAPI solutions. If you don’t have the expertise in Google Tag Manager or simply don’t have the time to set everything up manually, Stape is the way to go.

  • Easy setup
  • Routes all events through server containers
  • Built-in de-duplication
  • Fast event delivery
  • Amazing logging so you can see exactly what Meta receives

Google Tag Manger Server-Side

Google Tag Manager is a staple at North Studio for customizing event tracking across any website platform. We use it with most of our clients to ensure tracking is set up properly, and to troubleshoot in case anything goes wrong.

GTM’s Server-Side solution is more customizable and technical than a tool like Stape, which makes it ideal if you want full control on your tracking. It’s likely overkill for many sites and can break your tracking if not configured properly, but the heavy lift to get this tool up and running with conversion tracking is well worth it for e-commerce sites and any business who relies heavily on their specific data parameters.

Elevar

Elevar is another popular option specifically for Shopify stores. Its interface is more user-friendly than Google Tag Manager for non-technical business owners, and gives a leg-up over the native conversion tracking integration included in Shopify.

Shopify’s Native CAPI Integration

Like we mentioned earlier, Shopify’s native CAPI integration is better than having nothing set up, but it’s far from perfect. If you’re new to running Meta Ads and aren’t sure how long you’ll run them for, the native integration is more than fine. However, if you’re planning on running ads long-term, are in a very competitive field, or are looking for the best performance you can possible get from Meta Ads, then you’ll want something more than the native integration.

Troubleshooting Decreased Ads Performance: What You Can Do Right Now

If your ads aren’t performing, run through this quick checklist ASAP:

  1. Make sure both your browser Pixel and CAPI are sending events
  2. Ensure de-duplication is set up correctly to avoid events being tracked multiple times
  3. Test every key event (checkout, add to cart, purchases, leads)
  4. Consider a server-side tool for better accuracy
  5. Check your Event Match Quality for a score better than 6
  6. Reduce redundant events (double-firing kills optimization)

Once Meta gets clean data from your site, you’ll notice these changes:

  • Ads performance stabilizes
  • Cost-Per-Acquisition drops
  • Return on Ad Spend climbs
  • The Learning phase becomes shorter
  • Your ideal audience becomes clearer.
